In 1960, the popular and hard-hitting Shomo added a new chapter to the Golden Gloves history book when he captured the 135-pound open championship for a then-unprecedented fourth Golden Gloves title.

Led by Clay, Chicago sent one of the strongest teams it had ever assembled to New York for the Inter-city showdown at Madison Square Garden. Rounding out the Chicago team were former Daily News Golden Gloves champions Pete and Nick Spanakos, and a young middleweight named Jimmy Ellis.

The Chicago team had it all except a front-line heavyweight. It didn’t matter; they had Clay. Although he weighed only 172 pounds, on the biggest stage in boxing in front of a Madison Square Garden crowd of 15,295, Clay climbed into the ring against 232-pound Gary Jawish. Clay beat, battered, outboxed, wore down, knocked down and eventually stopped the bigger man in round three.
